The United States this year fell to its lowest place in the World Happiness ReportAn annual survey published on International Happiness Day. The 2025 report highlights the positive effects that benevolence and social connections have on the satisfaction of people’s lives.
Finland remained the happiest nation for the eighth consecutive year, while Mexico and Costa Rico qualified for the first ten for the first time since the report was published in 2012.
This year’s report occupies 147 countries for its levels of happiness, based on the average evaluation of a population of its quality of life from 2022 to 2024. The data from the Gallup World survey, which asks respondents to evaluate their current life, is the main source of the annual rankings of happiness.
Researchers found that belief in the goodness of others, in addition to taking care and sharing with others, has strong effects on happiness, according to the report.
« Happiness is not just about wealth or growth, it is confidence, connection and knowing that people have their backs, » said Jon Clifton, the CEO of Gallup, in a statement.
The United States occupies 24th place, its lowest ranking
The United States took place number 24 in the world, a place lower than its Ranking 2024. America previously won the eleventh place in 2012.
A prominent factor in the report was the growing number of people who Eat alone.
« In 2023, about 1 in 4 North, americans reported all meals alone the day before, an increase of 53% since 2003, » the report said. « The dining room alone has become more prevalent for each age group, but especially for young people. »
The report reviewed for the report indicate significant differences in food distribution rates worldwide, sharing meals with a positive effect on well -being.
Another factor that contributed to the fall of the rankings of America, as well as in the ranking of some European countries, was « the increase in political polarization and the votes against the system, » the report said.
« The evolution of happiness and confidence throughout the country is very associated with increasing the likelihood of voting anti-system parties in Western Europe and the United States, » wrote the authors.
Mexico, Costa Rica enters the top 10 for the first time
One of the key reasons for increasing the ranking of Mexico and Costa Rica seemed to be the size of the family home.
« Latin American societies, characterized by larger and strong family -owned home size, offer valuable lessons for other societies seeking higher and more sustainable well -being, » the report said.
The report compared Mexico with European countries, explaining that, although poorer, « larger households involve potential advantage in building positive social interactions within the home, which could partially counterbalance the differences in revenue with Europe. »
In Europe, 23% of households were monoplaial, while in Mexico, only 11% were single -skydowl, according to data cited in the report.
« In both Mexico and Europe, people living in homes with four to five members, » wrote the authors. « We also observe an inverted U -shaped relationship. The satisfaction of a half -life is less for the people of households with a single person, as well as the homes with six or seven members. »
Fallen portfolio experiment
The Gallup World Poll asked the people in 2019 if they thought others would return a lost wallet and found that « people are too pessimistic about the benevolence of others. »
« When researchers dropped portfolios on the street, the proportion of returned portfolios was much higher than expected, » the report said.
The belief that the others would return the lost portfolios also contributed to the ranking of a country.
The Nordic nations, including Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, were classified in the first 10 countries and found themselves among the most important places for the expected and real return of lost portfolios, according to the report.
« The portfolio data is so convincing because they confirm that people live much happier where people think they care, » said John F. Helliwell, an economist at the University of British Columbia and a founding publisher of The World Happiny Report, in a statement.
Additionally, researchers found that benevolent acts worldwide were 10% more frequent in 2024 than in 2017-2019.
