A Russian missile attack in the Ukrainian city of Sumy, who killed 34 people (including two children) and wounded at 117 others, has been strongly condemned by the western allies of Kiev.
Two ballistic missiles struck the city center on Sunday in the middle of the morning, exploiting near the State University and the Congress Center, leaving to the blood -diminished bodies on the streets.
The Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, called the « horrifying » attack, while the chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, accused Russia of committing a war crime.
There was no immediate official comment on Russia’s attack, which is said that forces on the nearby border are preparing for a major offensive.
The attack occurs when the United States, the strongest military ally of Ukraine, has been ending the war – as in the fourth year – by negotiating under President Donald Trump.
Ukraine leader Volodymyr Zelensky has urged Trump to visit Ukraine and see the devastation contributed by Russia’s invasion.
« Please, before any type of decision, any form of negotiations, come to see people, civilians, warriors, hospitals, churches, children destroyed or dead, » he said on Sunday in an interview for the 60 -minute CBS program.
Offering his condolences to the loved ones of the victims, Rubio, the Secretary of State of the United States, said that the attack was a « tragic reminder » of why the Trump administration was « putting so much time and effort to try to end this war. »
Previously, Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg withdrew LT-GEN, used stronger language, saying that the attack had crossed « any line of decency. »
Merz, who is expected to take over as the new chancellor of Germany next month, told the German public broadcaster Ard that the Sumy attack was a « serious war crime ».
« It was a perfidious act … and it is a crime of serious war, deliberate and planned, » said the conservative politician.
In the meantime, the chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, said that the attack showed « what was the supposed preparation of Russia for peace (Valia).
French President Emmanuel Macron accused Russia of « blatantly discarding the human life, international law and the diplomatic efforts of President Trump ».
« Strong measures are needed to impose a fire on Russia, » he said. « France works tirelessly towards this goal, along with its partners. »
Describing the attack as « barbaric », the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, added: « Russia was and is still the aggressor, in the blatant violation of international law.
« Heavy measures are urgently needed to enforce the cessation of fire. Europe will continue to serve members and maintain a strong pressure on Russia until the end of the bloodshed and a just and lasting peace is achieved, depending on the terms and conditions of Ukraine. »
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also gave a vision, saying he was « daring to the horrible attacks of Russia against Civilians in Sumy. »
A spokesman for the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, said he was « deeply alarmed and shocked » to find out the attack of missiles.
« Attacks against civilians and civil objects are banned by international humanitarian law and that such attacks, wherever they occur, must end immediately, » he added.
Guterres emphasized the support of the United Nations to « significant efforts towards just, lasting and complete peace that fully defends the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine ».
The Sunday missile strike was the deadliest attack on Civilians in Ukraine this year.
Another Russian missile attack earlier this month, on April 4, killed 20 people and injured 61 in the city of Kryvyi Rih.
On that occasion, the Russian Ministry of Defense said he had led a « western unit and instructors » commanders at a restaurant. No proof was provided.
It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of people, the vast majority of soldiers, have been killed or injured on all sides since Russia launched a large -scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
