Trump cuts US $ 175 million in college funding about transgender athlete on swimming team

The Trump administration has suspended about US $ 175 million in federal funding for the University of Pensilvania for the participation of a transgender athlete in its swimming program, said the White House on Wednesday.

The Ivy League School has faced an investigation into the Department of Education focused on its swimming program. This investigation was announced last month immediately after United States President Donald Trump signed an executive order Intended to ban transgender athletes to compete in girls and women’s sports.

However, the federal money that was suspended came from a separate revision of discretionary funding for universities, said the White House. It came from the Department of Defense and the Department of Health and Human Services.

A spokesman for Penn said the school had not received any notification or details of the action.

« It is important to keep in mind, however, that Penn has always followed the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) and the policies of the Ivy League on the participation of students in athletic teams, » said spokesman Ron Ozio.

« We have been in the past and we are today, fulfilling the fulfillment of the regulations that are applied not only to Penn, but also to all our institutions between peers of the NCAA and Ivy League. »

The investigation in Penn, opened by the Office of the Department of Civil Rights Education, focuses on Lia Thomas, who swam in the school women’s team and was the first openly transgender athlete to win a division title and in 2022.

The agency also opened reviews on the volleyball of the State University of San Jose and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association.
