President Donald Trump could start dismantling the Department of education Through an executive order, but would need the approval of Congress in order to officially abolish the agency.

The Department of Education was established in 1979 after the Congress approved the Law of the Organization of the Department of Education, signed in Law by former President Jimmy Carter. Republicans, including former President Ronald Reagan, have been asking the department for decades for decades to dismantle an effort to determine educational decisions at the state and local levels.

The representative Thomas Massie, R-KY., Reintroduced the legislation in January to abolish the department, stating: « The Department of Education will end on December 31, 2026 ».
