The postdoctoral researcher Badar Khan Suri accused of « spreading Hamas’ propaganda and promoting anti -Semitism. »
An United States Indian postdoctoral researcher who spoke against the Israeli War in Gaza faces deportation after being detained under the President of the United States, Donald Trump, repression of immigration.
Badar Khan Suri, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Georgetown in Washington, DC, was designated for deportation to « spread Hamas’ propaganda and promote anti -Semitism » on social media, said Tricia McLaughlin, an assistant secretary of the Security Department of Homeland (DHS) on Wednesday.
« Suri has narrow connections with a known or suspicious terrorist, who is Hamas’ principal advisor, » McLaughlin told X.
« The Secretary of State issued a determination on March 15, 2025 that the activities and the presence of Suri in the United States made it deportable by virtue of Section 237 (a) (4) (c) (i). »
McLaughlin did not provide evidence of his vindication of links between Suri and Hamas, the group governing Gaza.
Suri, who was studying at the Alwaleed Bin Talal center in Georgetown for Muslim-Christian understanding, is currently being held in a United States immigration and customs detention installation at Alexandria International Airport in Louisiana, according to the ICE online arrest premises.
Ahmad Hassan, a lawyer representing Suri, on Wednesday filed a request for the publication of the researcher in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, according to an online court presentation.
Hassan did not respond immediately to a comment request from Al Jazeera.
In a statement to Al Jazeera, a spokesman for Georgetown University said that Suri had been granted to a student visa to carry out « doctoral research on peace construction in Iraq and Afghanistan ».
« We are not aware that he participates in any illegal activity and we have not received any arrest, » said the spokesman.
« We support the rights of our community members to the research, deliberation and debate of our community members, even if underlying ideas can be difficult, controversial or objectable. We hope that the legal system will award this case in a fair way. »
An account X that uses Suri’s name and Georgetown’s affiliation contains several criticism of Israel and expressions of support for the Palestinian cause.
In a position in June, the account accused India of being « genocide facilitator » after the Palestine Quds Network, published to show the remains of an Israeli missile labeled « Made in India ».
« From being an ally of Palestinians, to facilitating a genocide. What a disbaux he made in India, supplying missiles to Israel so that Palestinian children can be killed, » said Suri.
« Change of values for money in blood. Shame. »
In a October 2023 publication, the account named Suri said that many Indians supported Israel for the hatred of Muslims, not « for the love of Israel. »
Suri detention comes less than two weeks after Trump’s DHS arrest Student at Columbia Mahmoud Khalil University about their participation in pro-palestinian protests.
On Wednesday, a federal court ruled that Khalil, a United States permanent resident, could proceed with a legal challenge against the Trump Administration Order for its deportation.
Judge Jesse Furman ruled that the Khalil argument that his retirement would violate his freedom of expression and the rights of the process due to the United States Constitution, justified a « careful review. »
