The withdrawal of the reward comes days after the Afghan group releases a citizen from the United States.
The United States has raised a $ 10 million reward for information on the arrest of a significant Taliban leader, according to Sirajuddin Haqqani, a spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry.
Despite the announcement on Saturday, the FBI still lists the reward on its website, saying that Haqqani « believed that he had coordinated and participated in cross -border attacks on the United States and coalition forces in Afghanistan. »
The movement comes after the Taliban Thursday released a citizen from the United States which had been kept in captivity for two years.
The launch of George Glezmann, who was abducted while traveling as a tourist in Afghanistan in December 2022, marks the third time a North -American detainee has been released by the Taliban since January.
In a statement, the Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, said that Glezmann’s release represented a « positive and constructive step. » He also thanked Qatar for his « instrumental » role in achieving the launch.
The Taliban have previously described the release of North -Americans as part of their overall effort of « standardization ».
The group is still an international paria since its Afghanistan lightning in August 2021. No country has officially recognized The Taliban government, although several countries continue to operate diplomatic facilities in the country.
The Taliban acquisition occurred when the administration of the former President of the United States, Joe Biden, oversaw a withdrawal of the first administration of President Donald Trump.
The President of the United States had negotiated with the Taliban in 2020 to end the war in Afghanistan, and agreed to a period of 14 months to remove American troops and allied forces.
The agreement was controversial for the Afghan government with Western support, which was ousted during the chaotic departure of the United States in 2021.
Haqqani, the son of a famous war commander against the Soviets, was the head of the powerful Haqqani network, a « terrorist group » designated by the United States, viewed as one of the most dangerous armed groups in Afghanistan.
It is infamous because of its use of suicide bombers and it is believed that it has orchestrated some of the most prominent attacks in Kabul over the years.
The network is also accused of murdering the maximum Afghan officials and western rescue citizens, including the North -American Soldier Bowe Bergdahl, published in 2014.
Haqqani had continued to be in the North Radar -American even after the Taliban taking. In 2022, an American drone strike in Kabul killed the Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri. According to American officials, the house in which Al-Zawahiri died was a home for Haqqani.
