The United States leaves carbon conversations about shipping, urges others to follow


The United States has withdrawn from talks in London by looking at the breakthrough in the decarbonization of the maritime sector and Washington will consider « reciprocal measures » to compensate for the rates charged by North -American ships, said a diplomatic note.

Delegates are at the headquarters of the UN Shipment Agency this week for negotiations on decarbonization measures to allow the world marked industry to reach zero net at « around 2050. »

An initial proposal from a block of countries, including the European Union, which was presented to the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO), had tried to reach the agreement for the first carbon rate in the world for greenhouse gas emissions (GEH).

« For these reasons, the United States does not participate in negotiations at the IMO Environmental Protection Committee of IMO 83 from April 7 to 11 and urges your government to reconsider its support for GeH emissions measures that are considered. »

It was not clear how many of the countries of 176 members of the IMO received the note.

« If such a outdated measure is carefree, our government will consider reciprocal measures to compensate for the rates charged by North -American ships and compensate for the North -American people for any other economic damage from any GHGE emissions measure, » said Washington’s note.

Washington also opposed « any proposed measure that would finance any environmental projects or other unrelated projects outside the maritime sector, » the note added.

China and Brazil are among several countries that opposed a flat carbon tax in shipments, as they argued that it would penalize the emerging commercial economies.

In January, the President of the United States Donald Trump ordered the United States to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement for the second time, placing the highest historical emitter of the greenhouse gas world outside the global pact destined to push nations to combat climate change.
