A Sudanese war monitor has accused the military of killing hundreds of people on an aerial strike in an western Darfur region of the country.
The Emergency Lawyers Group – which documents abused by the two parts of the Sudan Civil War, which broke out in April 2023 – said that the Tur’rah market bombing was a « horrible massacre » that had also left hundreds of injuries.
Videos published on social networks, some of The Rady The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group that controls much of Darfur, showed the smoking ruins of the market stalls and bodies that were carbonized beyond recognition.
A military spokesman denied guiding civilians, saying that he only attacked legitimate hostile goals.
Both the Sudanese and RSF armed forces have been accused on several occasions of damaging civil areas.
The RSF has deployed drones in Darfur, but the army has war planes, and regularly hits RSF positions throughout the region.
The BBC has not been able to confirm the number of deaths or the exact date of the market attack, which is about 35 km (21 miles) in the north of the city of El-Fasher.
An activist group of Darfur, the Darfur initiative for justice and peace, said that it happened on Monday and called it the « most deadly bombing since the beginning of the war. »
Civil deaths in the attacks of bombings and shells have intensified in recent months with the escalation of the fight in the brutal civil conflict of the country.
About 12 million Sudanese people have fled their homes since the war, which is equivalent to the entire population of Belgium or Tunisia.
Hunger has taken hunger and inanition is widespread, according to the United Nations, with more than half of the country experiencing « high levels of acute food insecurity ».
The estimates vary, but it is said that at least 150,000 people have been killed by the fighting.
The RSF has denied the evidence that a genocide is committed to Darfur, including the murder of thousands of civiliansand the violation of non -Arab women as a means of « ethnic cleansing ».
According to the UN, Sudan is the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.
