« Simpsons » never shied away from violence. Indeed, the show may have taken advantage of the dispute caused by the reflection of his father, who regularly strangled his son. The Simpsons were not your typical television family, and it was in this sense. The show and the Fox network, on which it was still broadcast, introduced into a completely new generation of a small screen, a great occasion of the then President George W. Bush, who is known to complain that American families should be much more like Walton and « much less like Simpsons. »

But even when Bush spoke this poorly informed ridicule, it was already too late. « Simpsons » could have a strong emotional nucleus and often carried out cardiac episodes that affected the audience much more than a multiplication comedy. But it was also how the mascot show in the early years, Bart Simpson, vulgar and proud of it.
One of the most restlessly rigid elements of the series was the beloved cartoon of Bart « Itching and Scratches », which was part of the « Kluna Klun ». In this show, a psychopathic mouse, « Itching » was presented in the show in the show, which with each episode will cripple and kill forever a horrible cat, « Shop ». « Simpsons » writers loved « itching and scratches » because it allowed them to break each TV ruleAnd the audience loved him for being so out of place because of her cruelty. The joke was immediately obvious to those who grew up with Tom and Jerry and acknowledged this sadistic parody of MGM’s favorite cartoon. But even experienced « Simpsons » fans can be surprised to hear that this legendary cat and the mouse duo were not really inspiration « itching and scratches » – at least not the only inspiration.

Itching and scratches were not ultra-moving parody on Tom and Jerry
Created in 1940 by the legendary animators Will Hannah and Joe Barber, Tom and Jerry became so successful that they may have become even better than their creators, as long as they are now a lasting part of the pop -culture of the 20th century. The series featured Tom Cat, who, despite his infinite desire to capture and kill Jerry Misch, always thwarted a tricky rodent. In « Itching and Scratching », this dynamics are impeded to extreme levels, and the mouse -saver is reflected as a killer who repeatedly fills on the cat more and more ingenious and sadistic ways. To the fact that, of course, the vast majority of « Simpsons » fans, the joke was simple here. It was a ridiculous bloody parody of Tom and Jerry. But, it turns out, this is not really a complete story.

Mike flight, writer and producer of « Simpsons », wrote a book called « Springfield Confidently: Jokes, Secrets and Right in which he remembers how itching and scratches were with « Simpsons » from the beginning when it was launched by the Sketch Comedy Series series. « Simpsons » began life as a number of shorts that will act as bombers between commercial interruptions at « Show Trice Ulman » and « Itching and drapes » actually debuted in one of these shorts since 1988 called « Bart Bart Simpson ». Then the Cat and Mouse duo first appeared in « The Simpsons » in the episode of 1 season « No shame like home ». But, as the flight continued to note, the characters of the cat and mice were not really a parody of Tom and Jerry, and instead were « inspired » by Herman and Katnip, « cheap, ultraviolet set of T&B ». The ultraviolet can be a little stretching, but « Herman and Katnip » were definitely « Tom and Jerry », which had much more intense violence than the original.

Was Hermand and Katnip the only inspiration for itching and scratches?
Unlike Tom and Jerry and his theater shorts with MGM, Herman and Katnip were made by famous studios, the first animation department of Paramount. The studio pulled out a number of theatrical cartoons featuring Herman Mouse and Katnip Cat in the 1940s and 50s. These cartoons had a similar rivalry between the titular characters, but took things further than Tom and Jerry, which presents more vicious escapades than the original MGM. The poor old Katnip at one time was sent below the well before Herman sent a stick of dynamite after him, grabbing a cat underground and turning into a makeshift master. Well, Katnip was actually sent to hell at one moment. In these amazingly rigid vignettes spread the seeds « Itching and scratches », which at one point became a spinoff that was so tough when the test made the audience with the sick.

Interestingly, it seems that while Mike flight states clearly that « Herman and Katnip » were an inspiration « itching and scratches », everything can be a little more complicated. On the one hand, director David Silverman supported the flight’s claim Msnbc interviews saying:
« People say ( » itching and scratches « ), like mad » Tom and Jerry « , but it’s really more insane » Herman and Katnip « .

But in an old interview television guidance (via Simpsonsarchive) The creator of the show Matt Granning said that « itching and scratches » were « inspired by all cartoons with cats and mice that we grew up, » believing that Tom and Jerry certainly had their influence. It makes sense, because there is no possibility of a parody cartoon about the rivalry between the cat and the mouse cannot accept some signals from the most cultural examples of this popular mid-20th century.
