Pope Francis suffered on Monday two new acute respiratory crises and re -sold non -invasive mechanics, in another setback in his battle with pneumonia, the Vatican said.
The doctors extracted amounts of « copious » mucus from their lungs for two bronchoscopies, in which a camera tip tube is sent to the respiratory tract with a suction cup on the tip by suction of the liquid.
The Vatican said that the mucus was the reaction of the body to the original pneumonia infection and not a new infection, as the laboratory tests do not indicate a new bacterium.
Francis remained alert, oriented and cooperated with medical staff. The prognosis remained kept. The doctors did not say if it remained in a stable state.
Doctors usually use non -invasive ventilation to prevent intubation or use of invasive mechanical ventilation. Francis has not been intubated during this hospitalization. It is unclear if you have provided early guidelines over the limits of your care if you decline or lose awareness.
The crises were a new mishap in which it has become a battle of more than two weeks by the 88 -year -old pope, which has a chronic lung disease and had part of a lung eliminated to overcome a complex respiratory infection.
In a late update, the Vatican said that the episodes were caused by a « significant accumulation » of mucus in their lungs and bronchial spasms. The « copious secretions » were extracted during the bronchoscopy and the pope was re -sold non -invasive mechanics, a mask that covers his nose and mouth, and pumping oxygen in the lungs, the Vatican said.
The Vatican has not published a photo or videos by Francis since he entered the hospital on February 14 with a complex pulmonary infection. This has become the longest absence of his 12 -year -old papacy.

Archbishop urges Francis to speak
The Vatican has defended Francis’s decision to recover -in peace and out of public sight. But on Monday, one of his closest friends to the Vatican, Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, urged him to let his voice be heard, saying that the world needs to listen to it.
« We need men like him who are really universal and not just unilateral, » said Paglia, speaking after an press conference to launch the annual assembly of his pontifical Academy for Life, The Vatican’s Bioethics Academy, which has the subject of this year « The end of the world? »
Francis wrote a message to the assembly, of February 26, in which he regretted that international organizations are becoming more ineffective to combat the threats that the world is facing and are mined by « short -term attitudes to protect particular and national interests ».
It is a topic that he has articulated before. Francis has also repeatedly requested peace between Russia and Ukraine as he tries to maintain the traditional Vatican diplomatic neutrality and has tried to achieve a similar balance act for the Israeli war with Hamas in Gaza.
Even an Ambassador of the Vatican not especially near Francis, Archbishop Georg Gaenswein, said that the faithful needed to hear his voice at a time when the war was in Europe. Gaenswein was the secretary of Pope Benedict XVI. Francis exiled him to be the Vatican ambassador to the Baltic after he published a memory in 2023 that he was critical of Francis.
« The voice of Pope Francis is of vital importance to the whole world because he is the only authority that speaks of peace, that condemns the war, all the wars underway from Ukraine, » said Gaenswein.
The hospitalization of 17 Nights by Francis is in no case near the papal record during the numerous hospitalizations of San Juan Pau II for a quarter of a century.
Canadian Cardinal Michael Czerny tells CBC News that Pope Francis had difficulty breathing during a visit three weeks ago before the pontiff was hospitalized and then diagnosed with pneumonia.
