New rules that determine how long the goalkeeper can keep in force will come into force from the beginning of the next season, it has been announced.

The Board of the International Football Association (IFAB), the creators of the rules of the game, say that the goalkeepers will now be punished for eight seconds or longer.

According to the current rules, guardians must be punished if they keep more than six seconds, but the crime is rarely fined.

The punishment for such a crime is currently an indirect free strike, but it will change a corner, new laws, which enter into force on July 1, 2025.

IFAB also said that before rewarding the corner, the referees will hold five seconds with their hands.

IFAB’s announcement after his AGM, said:

« The change means that if the goalkeeper keeps the ball for more than eight seconds (with the referee using a visual five-year disability).

The trial that allows you to maintain eight seconds has already been active in a number of competitions this season, including Premier League 2.
