For most people, the idea of a foreign holiday is to pack a suitcase and be out of a weekend, if not a week or more.
But for Monica Stot, a single day is enough to fly to another country, explore and return home before sleeping.
Wrexham’s 37 -year -old likes to participate in holidays that have become known online as extreme day trips, and has visited Milan, Bergamo, Lisbon, Amsterdam and even Reykjavik for a single day.
« I think people are always surprised that you really feel that you have had a vacation, » said Monica.
Monica, a full -time travel blogger, said that the idea of an extreme day trip first occurred while traveling through work.
« My first extreme day trips went to Ireland when I had customers there, » he said.
« Very often appeared for a meeting of one or two hours and would return home. Then I realized that I could stay (a little more) and make a full day. »
Mònica then discovered several Facebook groups where people shared their own extreme -day travel experiences and was inspired to start reserving their free time.
« There are investigations that suggest that most of your best vacation memories are made in the first or two days. When I thought -I agreed. Many of the best times happen when you arrive for the first time.
« Get on time for breakfast, squeeze -as much as you can, and then fly home at night. It’s an intense, busy and crazy day. »
While Monica enjoys the days occupied in a place, Luka Chijutomi-Ghosh, an 18-year-old Cardiff student, has done things one step further.

« It started on Christmas Eve when I found a flight back to Prague for less than £ 15. I reserved it immediately, but then I realized that the flight landed in Prague at 21:00 and returned to the United Kingdom at 09:00, » said Luka.
« So I thought I could try, as if it were the day, sleeping up to date and walking around the city at night. »
Luka said he realized that he only needed six hours to explore a city.
A few weeks later, when on vacation in Paris, he decided to see how many neighboring countries could travel on a train day.
« I went to Luxembourg, Brussels and Amsterdam, and returned to Paris all the same day, » he said.
Luka’s logic, he said, was probably so long to travel if he were on a day trip to the United Kingdom.

Facebook groups where people share their experiences of extreme day trips have acquired hundreds of thousands of members, with some focus specifically at the UK regional airports.
Monica and Luka said that their trips were efficient, respectful of the budget and helped break their routines without needing a week away from home.
« People always say that they would love to visit places like Paris or Rome, but it has no time or money for a long journey. This is a way of doing it, » said Monica.
For Luka, it is also a practical choice.
« I look at how much I spend on a student night, sometimes up to £ 60 or £ 70. If I can get a return flight for less than £ 20 and experience a totally new city, why not? »

Despite the enthusiasm of Monika and Luka, extreme day trips have criticized their environmental impact.
The flight is responsible for 2.4% of world greenhouse gas emissions and 8% of the United Kingdom emissions.
These gases heat the atmosphere, contributing to global warming and climate change.
Both Monica and Luka recognize this problem.
« I think if it means that people take more flights and the airlines are putting more flights, I see it as a negative impact, » said Monica.
« But many people who go on an extreme day excursions do so because they cannot afford to spend a longer holiday or have no time.
« I don’t think it is fair to say that a person’s holiday is more important than another person’s holiday, because they spend more time. »
Luka argued that flights would often go ahead independently.
« The seat will be filled by someone, » he said.
« Also, if another form of transport can be used, it would be a good idea. For example, on my journey that involved three cities, I did not take a single flight. »
Both also said that extreme day trips were attractive due to the high cost of public transport in the United Kingdom.

Mònica said that her travels required careful planning.
« I try to choose destinations less than a two -hour flight. Once you arrive more than two hours, it is such a long journey day. »
He also said he tried to stay quiet at the airport to prevent unnecessary stress.
« Many people are very excited or anxious at the airport and this can be exhausting, » he said.
« If you just treat it how to get on a train or bus, do not use your entire energy with this anxiety before the holidays. »
