Hundreds of Palestinians have protested northern Gaza to demand the end of the war and sing « Hamas Out », demonstrated social media publications, in a rare public show of opposition to the militant group that caused the last war with their attack of October 7, 2023 in Israel.
Northern Gaza has been one of the most devastated areas of the enclave since the conflict began. Most of the densely populated buildings have been reduced to the rubble and much of the population has moved several times.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the protest showed that Israel’s decision to renew his offensive worked in Gaza, where Hamas police, the group’s agents, has disappeared again after arising during a cessation of fire.
« Outside, outside, Hamas goes out, » sang the views in one of the publications published in X, apparently from the Beit Lahiya region of Gaza on Tuesday. He showed the people that he was leaving a dusty street between buildings damaged by the war.
« It was a spontaneous manifestation against the war because the people are tired and it does not take place where to go, » a witness said, who spoke with his name that it was not used for fear of remuneration.
« Many slogans sang against Hamas, not all people, but many, saying » Hamas « . People are exhausted and no one should blame them, » he said.
Places began to circulate widely late on Tuesday. Reuters could confirm the location of the video for buildings, useful poles and road design that coincide with the satellite images in the area. Reuters could not verify the date of the video independently. However, several videos and photographs shared on social media showed protests in the area on Tuesday.
Elsewhere, one of the banners of the people read « enough wars », while people sang, « We don’t want the war. »
« Suspected Political Agendas, » Hamas says
Hamas’ official base, Naim, said that people had the right to protest the suffering inflicted by the war, but denounced what they said were « suspicious political agendas » that exploited the situation.
« Where are they from, what happens in the West Bank? » he said. « Why don’t they protest against aggression there or allow people to go out to report this aggression? »
The comments, which reflect the tensions between the Palestinian factions on the future of Gaza, arrived several hours after the rival movement Fatah asked Hamas to « respond to the call of the Palestinian people of the Gaza Strip ». Fatah directs the Palestinian authority to occupied West Bank.
More than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli campaign in Gaza, launched after Hamas led by gunmen attacking communities in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and abducted 251 as hostages, according to Israeli Tallies.
Much of the strait coastal enclave has been reduced to the rubble, leaving hundreds of thousands of people staying in tents or bombed buildings.
Netanyahu says Israeli politics works
Hundreds of thousands of residents fleeing south of Gaza before the war returned to their ruined homes to the north after a high fire came into force in January.
Now, the Israeli evacuation orders after the country re -launched its offensive on March 18, has destroyed the two -month truce, during which Hamas handed over hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and detainees to Israeli prisons.
« Every gaza is in ruins and now the occupation ordered us to leave the north again, where to go? » He said the testimony of the protests.
Netanyahu said that protests showed that Israel’s politics worked.
« In recent days, we have seen something unprecedented: open protests in Gaza against Hamas’ rule. This shows that our policy works. We are determined to achieve all our war goals, » said Netanyahu during a speech to Parliament.
Gaza Israeli aerial attacks damaged the Nasser Hospital and killed at least 65 people in a 24 -hour period, said Hamas’ Ministry of Health. Continuous attacks have led some agencies to reduce their footprint in the region.
Since Israel resumed his strikes in Gaza, saying his goal was to completely dismantle Hamas, about 700 people, mostly women and children, have been killed, according to Palestinian health officials.
Hamas deployed thousands of police and safety forces to all Gaza after the cessation of fire came into force in January, but his armed presence has been abruptly withdrawn since March 18, when the main attacks of Israel were resumed. Fewer police were present in some areas, while members and leaders of the armed wing left the radar to prevent Israeli air attacks.
Although official contacts aimed at recovering the cessation process have continued, there have been little sign on ahead of central issues, such as the future Gaza Strip government.
Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007 in the election that devastated the Fatah group of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. He has ruled the enclave since then, offering little space for the opposition. Some Palestinians see the precaution of speaking publicly against the group for fear of remuneration.
The two movements have been for years and have failed to overcome the differences in the future of the postwar period of Gaza, which the Palestinian authority says it must be under its authority.
Hamas, although he expresses his preparation to go back from an active part of the Government, says he must participate in the selection of any administration below.
