The interim president of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, said he would punish « even among the closest » to participate in massive killings in the coastal region of the country days ago.
It is said that hundreds died in violence, including members of the Alawite minority, as well as the security forces that were ambushed by the apparent supporters of former President Bashar al-Assad. The security forces are accused of carrying out attacks of « revenge » after the ambush that took place against them.
« We struggled to defend the oppressed and we will not accept that any blood is unfairly seen, or that it has no punishment or responsibility, even among those closest to us, » Al-Sharaa said in an interview with Reuters news agency on Monday.
« Many parts entered the Syrian coast and many violations occurred, » added Al-Sharaa. « It became an opportunity for revenge. »
Al-Assad is an Alawite, and many main members of its regime, which was deployed in December, were in the minority, with much of the majority of Sunni in the country disassociated by a prominent state by its massive death of Syrians affiliated with the opposition.
