Cuba suffered a massive Friday night stop that affected Havana and the provinces of the country that left millions in the dark.
The Ministry of Energy and Mines of Cuba said that at 8.15 pm, local time, an electrical interruption in the Diezmero substation on the outskirts of Havana had caused « a significant loss of generation in western Cuba and, with it, the failure of the national electrical system ».
The ministry told X to X that he is « working on the recovery process ».
The streets of Havana were dark and empty, with the light that came only from the hotel windows that had generators.
The people in the provinces as distant as Guantanamo, Artemisa, Santiago de Cuba and Santa Clara reported that they were experiencing off with only eyelids.
Previously, the Electric Union, the state agency governing the sector, said in its daily report that the demand for rush hours would be about 3,250 megavatios and the deficit would reach around 1,380 megavatios, which means that 42 percent of the national energy system would be closed. This figure is not the highest in recent memory.
Cuba suffered three widespread interruptions in its national energy system at the end of last year, leaving the island in the dark in the middle of a serious economic crisis.
The Cuban power grid has been plagued by frequent interruptions in recent months, with more than half of the country experiencing energy cuts during rush hours. The interruptions are mainly caused by the scarcity of fuel and the aging infrastructure. In many parts of the island, electricity is crucial for cooking and pumping water.
